Q: Is a Toyota Tercel 1996 an interference or non-interference engine?
For the purpose of knowing how long I can go to get a timing belt replaced can anyone tell me if a Toyota Tercel 1996 is an interference or non-interference engine and possibly post a source or chart. Thanks

A: Toyota chain drive engines are usually non-clearance, and Toyota t-belt engines are clearance. It wont damage the engine if it breaks, although I have seen it ruin the crank gear if the belt winds up on it after breaking. You should change the t-belt at 90k. I have seen them last to 120k and somethimes 140k, but they usually don't. I wouldn't go to far past 100k just because if it does give out it will happen late at night in a rain storm far from everywhere. They are pretty easy to do, but if you have a/c, there is one bolt that is right behind the a/c bracket to the upper cover that is hard to get out. It is possible to get it out without removing the compressor bracket, it doesn't have to be put back in. It's common to leave this bolt out.

Q: How long and hard is it to change the timing belt on a 1996 Toyota Tercel? I'm fairly auto savvy.?

A: The book says a tech should take no more than 5 hours to complete everything. If this is the first time you are doing a timing belt. than times that by 3. Go slow take a lot of pictures when disassembling. This helps a lot.

Q: does anyone know how to install seat belts for a toyota tercel 1996?
need help etheir explaning it or a picture might help.

A: There should be one big bolt for the shoulder strap and two big bolts for the seat belt (one on each end). They are torqued on pretty tight so you might need a long ratchet handle or breaker bar to get them off. For front seat belts, move the seat until you can see where the seat belt connects to the floor. For rear seat belts, remove the rear seat. You don't need tools to remove the rear seat. It just clips in.

Q: 1996 Toyota Tercel 4 speed- It drives great but it still pops out of fourth gear.?
I just got my clutch replaced. What could it be? And how much would it cost?

A: unrelated to clutch...its the 4th gear syncro... cost 1200 to 1600...because as long as tranny is apart you rebuild the whole thing..put a bungee cord around it to hole it in gear,,,worked for me,, a used junk yard tranny can b put in for 300 to600 but who knows how it will work

Q: If I put 17/18 rims on my 96 Toyota Tercel DX will I have to get bigger and wider tires? Will they be more $$?
I have a 1996 Toyota Tercel DX Blackhawk Edition with current 155/80R-13 size tires if I buy new rims of Ebay like size 17 or 18 inch will I have to get bigger size tires and will the be more? My current tire price is 22 dollars or 33 dollars from Discount Tire Co. http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/searchTiresByVehicleAndSize.do?rcz=92120&mk=TOYOTA&rc=CASINT&yr=1996&cs=155&vid=006940&rd=13&ar=80 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/18-DRAG-DR8-BLACK-WHEELS-RIMS-TOYOTA-TERCEL-CELICA-ECHO_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43958QQihZ020QQitemZ300013489908QQrdZ1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/17-DRAG-DR10-BLACK-WHEELS-RIMS-TOYOTA-TERCEL-CELICA-MR2_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43957QQihZ020QQitemZ300013476965QQrdZ1 THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP

A: You're an idiot if you put anything bigger on your car then intended by the manufactuer. For one, your gas mileage will get worse. Every ounce you add per rim is more work per rotation exponentially for the engine. More work for the engine means more stress on internals, oil, etc. AND its more work for your braking system, primarily for pads and rotors. They are rated to stop a certain amount of force. By adding more weight you are adding more stress to the brakes. You'll burn through them faster. Probably increases your stopping distance too. If you get in an accident it could be used against you. And there is probably 50 other reasons not to do it. My point is, don't do it.

Q: Where can I find a Toyota Tercel 1995 or 1996 with a blown or bad engine. I have an engine, need a body.?

A: try Craigslist.com. Your not just gonna find one right off the bat so keep searching. Ever heard of U-Pull-it? we have those out here and you can get parts for everything. either that or junk yard. Type what you want into a search engine.

Q: Toyota Tercels aren't made anymore. Are they a bad choice for a used car? Are parts hard to come by?
I'm looking at a 1996 Tercel.

A: Tercels are actually a pretty reliable car. Their engines found their way into first generation Scions. 1.5 liter vvti enginges. The problem is that most poeple really beat on them and never upkept them. Their are no Tercels because they were replaced by trendy Scions. Parts are easy to find. And if you have some cash to redo the suspension, new shocks, springs, performance brakes. etc. They can be suprisingly swift and great handling cars. Engines last a long time if properly maintained.

Q: I have 2 12" inch Alpine Type E's, what amp should i buy to make them bump the hardest?
i have an Alpine 440 watt rms at 2 ohms amp and i was wondering if there is any amps out there that would make my type e's bump even harder then they already do. And trust me they do. I have a 1996 Toyota Tercel, a small car, but it makes the whole car shake, the trunk flex, and the plastic in my car shake, and everyone can hear me when im coming lol. But i want more power, help me out.

A: Nice system but maybe you should save up for a newer car.

Q: Emissions test module?
I own a 1996 Toyota Tercel, go ahead laugh, but it is paid for, gets 30mpg, and I don't have to worry about anyone stealing it. Anyhow. I took it in for a state emissions test and they were not able to read the plug in the cabin, there is a test point in the engine as well but they refuse to test from there. How difficult is it to replace the plug in module so they can test it and make me street legal again? Also, if I can find a used one would it be reasonable to try installing that, since a new one is almost $400.

A: Take it to a reputable shop and get it checked out. It may be a simple repair. When they can get your car to "scan" so will the state. May be as simple as a fuse. Also type in OBD problems in search and check for bulletins for your state for problem cars. They told me my car would not pass and I found that my car was on a list that the inspector was unaware of. Check it out and good luck.

Q: car vibrates too much?
My car is all shaky and vibrates a lot when i park it or put the gear in neutral. What does it need to have fixed? It´s a 1996 Toyota Tercel i forgot to mention that my car has manual transmission, not automatic

A: Sounds like weak/broken motor mount or you have a misfiring cylinder(s).Have you're mechanic take a look at it.

Q: IM LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO KNOWS ABOUT CAR???? PLEASE HELP?
So... my problem is that i dont know about cars. I need to buy one, i found a car Toyota tercel 1996 that has 198,378 miles. I going to buy it but im not sure is it a good price for the car. Is it too cheap?? and i have to go and do the smoke checkl. thank you!!

A: You never said how much you are paying for the car. A car with that many miles is a risk, regardless of its make. Unless the car has service records, make sure you evaluate the car and have a mechanic look it over if possible. Good luck!
