Q: Can a 1988 Toyota Tercel be considered a classic or an antique?
A: well no matter what people say about the tercel i have had two and in my opinion its a classic in its own right one of the only early cars with selectable 4wd instead of constant absolute beauty so yea a classic.
Q: 1988 toyota tercel starts but will not turn off. any ideas?
ingnishon turnes off but car keeps running. we installed a new engine and everything worked right before.
A: Starter drive is worn out, or the contact plunger spring is broken just replace the starter. You have a gear reduction starter and this happens when they start wearing out. Starter cost around 90.00
If the starter is rebuilt they may have used the wrong plunger,I would try and see if they would give you a replacement. let me know please
Q: Can I fill the trans fluid thru the can on the top to the left of the engine on a Toyota Tercel 1988?
Thanks for the answers. Can I just refill it from the top? That fluid is low. All those bolts from under the car sound a little complicated! It is not completely empty. This is an old car and I am keeping it alive. What does that shrill rubbing sound when I turn the steering wheel sound like to anyone?
A: The ATF Transmission Fluid (most likely Dexron III) is filled back through the narrow ATF neck with a special funnel.
From what noise you are experiencing only when turning, several years ago I had a similar sound on a Sienna XLE minivan and it required power steering fluid. Make sure you look carefully either on the top cover of the power steering fluid reservoir itself or in your owner's manual, bec most Toyotas require or use Dexron III ATF Fluid in the power steering system. Don't ask me why? in fact my noise came when I used the wrong power steering fluid but luckily I was smart enough to unbolt the entire power steering fluid in order to flush whatever I could get out to prevent damage and what could have been a lot of expenses...
Hope the Above Info Helps!
Q: 1988 toyota tercel quick running?
I was driving home from work in my 1988 toyota tercelan it just cut off. I went to the side of the road to try to start it. I step on the gas pedal several times. It would run for a few seconds then cut off. It is acting like it is not getting gas. I had it tow to my local mechanic. he has done eveything he knows to do and it is doing the same thing. He put a new fuel filter and fuel pump on it and it is still doing the same thing. do you have any ideals what it could be. It is also fuel injected. ** thanks**
A: Could be a vacumn leak or a timing chain. Have them looked at.
Q: I have a 1988 Toyota tercel do they make a body kit for my car?
A: Not in bulk.
The 3rdGen Tercel doesnt really have aftermarket support.
However, you could always have one made to fit.
If you really like the car...go for it.
Q: Oil in the Radiator/Water in my oil! 1988 toyota tercel dying a slow death!?
For the last 3 months I've been expecting this daily driver to croak, but it keeps on running min. 10 mi/day. It leaks about a cylinder's worth of coolant overnight which I replace often, other than topping the oil regularly it's seemingly unaffected by the obvious comingling of crankcase and radiator fluids. Within the next month or two, local temps will surpass 100F. on a regular basis. Will this likely spell death to this sturdy little motor? What can I do to prolong its tenuous lifespan? How can it still function w/o the classic whitesmoke out the tailpipe and seized bearings? There is substantial grayish goop in the radiator that matches the color of the dipstick's sample, so I assume the head integrity's compromised...
A: First thing I would do is flush the radiator out with a flush chemical, then with clean water. Get a bottle of Moroso Ceramic Sealer.

Follow the directions. ( it dosn't mix with antifreeze ) Basicly you run the engine with this product and water. You drain it and let it sit for 24 or more hours, so it can dry and harden, I dont remeber the exact time frame. After that you refill with coolant and water to 50% 50% mix. If it dosn't work it will be the first time I know of. I used it in a 97 Intrepid with a blown head gasket and got another year and a half plus out of it before it needed the head gaskets done. The guy that told me about it used it in his Trojan loader with and old V6 Detriot in it. He uses it in his junk yard. When he bought it the water ran out almost as fast as you put it in. He used two bottles as the radiator is large. That was about 8 years ago its still running, no leaks.
Q: 1988 toyota tercel Ez Carburator?
I need to buy a used or a rebuilt one at a good price 1988 toyota ez carburator. It is a 4 cyl 1.5L 4 four speed 2 door hatch back
A: I'm not shure why an 88' would have a carburator but, Weber makes a kit for most any car that comes with a new Weber 32/36 Progresive carburator, manifold adapter, Gaskets, Air cleaner and linkage set up. The progresive carb works with 2 barrels, a primary and a secondary. the 32mm one is used for normal driving. When the peddle is pushed to the floor the 36mm barrel opens and alows for more power. I have the kit on my corolla an I am very happy with the fuel econmy I receved from it!
Q: how much is a 1988 Toyota Tercel EZ (red) 2 door car worth today ?
A: 5o.00 at the wreckers
Q: Where do you put the transmission fluid on a 1988 Toyota Tercel?
I thank you for your answer before. The powersteering fluid is put in the thing that looks like the brake fluid container and on the same side only smaller?(that you put brake fluid into too)? My car is making a shrill rubbing sound when I turn the steering wheel, as long as it is in the middle I don't hear the sound. It just started about 2 days ago. I am afraid to drive it because I think something is going out and I don't want to be stranded. What is put in the container on the opposite side that when you open it, the top has a stick that says cool and hot or something?
A: In automatic tranny you fill it through the dipstick holder (tube). Just be careful that you don't overfill the automatic tranny fluid. Thats a good way to blow the seals on the auto.
On the manual tranny you have to get under the car and find one of 2 bolts (one high up - fill and one low -drain). Basically you will find on the side of the tranny a large bolt that holds nothing. They are just filler cap bolt. You open the top one and fill the tranny with a long funnel from the top. Basically you fill it till it is about 1/2 inch from the top of the hole (you fill it with your finger - or just till of overflow through the hole.
Good Luck...
P.S. It sounds like you found the tranny dipstick.
Q: 1988 tercel hard starting question?
the tercel was driven by a little old lady and only has 138,000kms on it and was always given premium gas(which is silly)
when I just drove it for 30 mins on the freeway and then parked for about 20 minutes it was hard to start and I had to floor the gas pedal for it to start. when I got home after another 20 mins on the freeway at 70mph I turned it off and immediately turned it back on and it started easy. It is a warm 85f day.
it is a 1988 toyota tercel 4 door with the hatchback that is almost vertical. it has a 4 cylinder 12 valve engine that looks like it has a carburator (round air cleaner on top). the spark plug wires look very new.
what commonly causes this? is there a particular filter or sensor that is dirty?
thank you
A: Clean the carburetor (u knew that)
check the choke setting
linkages may be worn, rusty
good luck

1300cc Gasoline. 2E engine. Twin Throttle Carburettor (taken from EE96), 4 speed gearbox, Model Number: Toyota Corsa EL30 LHKDS (1988).

A: Custom tubing.
After all, it is just for looks.

Q: Car Clutch Crisis!" I need an expert car specialist on this one.?
I have a clutch that won‘t shift gears…I own a 1988 Toyota tercel front wheel drive 4 cylinder 2-door 1.5 litter engine vehicle. Here’s my problem: When my car is off! I am usually able to switch my car gear to any speed, but, when I turn my car on, my car goes off!.. at whatever speed I left it on , I am not able to switch gears while driving my car, until my car is turned off again, is when I’m able to swith gears. “What’s wrong with my car?.”
A: Either your slave or master cylinder is not pushing the clutch arm in or your clutch disc and pressure plate needs replacing. See if your slave cylinder is operating and go from there.
Q: White Smoke, No Coolant Leak No Overheating.?
I have a 1988 Toyota Tercel I recently purchased. The car has 148k Miles on the engine and its puffing white smoke. Last year the head was re-done and it sat for a year after that.
I drained the Radiator, Oil and old gas and did a oil change, air and fuel filter change, added some engine restore, new gas and gas treatment. I also added a new PCV valve.
It smokes white smoke really heavily but it does not overheat, and it does not lose any fluids. What can be the cause of this? It basically does it when its warm and or cold, but mostly cold.
Where could all that extra moisture be coming from?
Its not an automatic, its a 5 speed. And it was already checked out by my mechanic and he even said it was white smoke.
It also doesnt linger, it goes away pretty fast.
A: Could be oil smoke, which has a slight bluish tint to it. Oil smoke also lingers, and you can smell it, it is quite acrid. Coolant smoke will dissipate rapidly.
It's 20 years old, so it could very well be valve seals, or even bad oil rings on the pistons if it is oil.I would have to guess oil, since you coolant isn't dropping.

A: well it wouldnt be carburated, thats just a throttle body.
i would say its a sensor. there is a sensor that tells your motor when to give it more gas in the morning and when the car is cold, if it is messed up, then it could be giving you too much gas all the time and flooding it. when your motor is warm, you dont need as much gas to start it, so it would just flood and not start. ask a mechanic.
