Q: how to take the dash of a 1998 toyota tacoma out?
i am trying to install a new cd player in my 1998 toyota tacoma and am having a diffucult time getting the dash off, if anyone knows how or knows where i could find out help would be appreciated,
PS crutchfield didn't have anything
A: I am assuming that you want the center section out so that you can remove the radio and the lower box. If you will remove the heater control knobs by pulling them straight off, you will find screws hidden behind them. When you take those screws out, the center panel should come out and reveal the radio bolts, though you may have to pull really hard. If this doesn't seem to do it, email me at toyodave@yahoo.com and I will send you an Adobe file of the repair manual page. Good luck and God Bless!
Q: How to reset the ECU for a 1998 Toyota Tacoma?
Check engine light came on... Took to auto-parts store for a diagnostics test. Upper oxygen sensor is gone. Read online that we try this because at least 1 sensor was replaced 2 years ago.
A: disconnect one of the battery terminals, wait for a few minutes. reconnect the terminal. that will reset the ECU
however, i dont think resetting the ECU will remove the trouble code. you have to use a OBD II reader like the one the auto parts store is using to clear the code
Also, the trouble code should tell you if it is the O2 sensor before or after the cat that threw the code. if it isn't the one you replaced, then there is a good chance the part is in fact bad and needs to be replaced
Q: How do I replace the emergency brake cable to my 1998 Toyota tacoma truck?
The cable snapped at the end of the emergengy brake release rod. I can not figure out how to remove the old cable anchor and attach the new one. The rest is easy enough to do, I just don't have any experience with this part of the repair. Thanks in advance for any help.
A: Can you say, "pain in the neck?" Look under the dash at the parking brake lever. Follow it toward the firewall until you find where a small silver lever contacts the e-brake light switch. (It will be on the brake pedal side. You have to remove that pin, which is pressed into place. With it removed, the lever will slide through and you can disengage/reingage the cable. That pin has ridges on it, so don't twist it or it will break off! (Gee, I wonder how I know that! :-) ) I usually remove the handle assembly. Not fun, for sure!
Hope this helps! God Bless!
Q: How many lugs are on a 1998 toyota tacoma two wheel drive?
A: If you have a Pre Runner or a 4x4 then it's 6, but if you have a regular mini truck then it's 5.
Q: My 1998 toyota tacoma"s gas pedal gets stuck when I take off. What does this mean?
I have to push down on it hard before it takes off and it hesitates at first.
A: All gas pedals are cable driven, meaning that there is a cable running from the foot feed to the throttle .
If the cable frays it will stick, do this. Open the hood and locate the cable. Unhook it from the throttle and work it in and out by hand. It should work freely. If not then it is binding in the housing and time for a new one.
Call Toyota and check on the price. It is a dealer item only and you need a new one.
Q: How to replace a 1998 Toyota Tacoma clutch?
any special tricks that I would need to know? I am pretty mechanically inclined, just never touched a truck. Helping my brother out with this one....
A: You will need a transmission jack on a good solid service. You will need an alignment tool. I would get the fly wheel resurfaced (turned) at a machine shop just for good measure. If it has any burs or defects it will ruin the clutch pad. At the very least clean it thoroughly and inspect for any defects..Have Fun...
Q: Value of 1998 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 regular cab pickup?
What is the value of a 1998 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 regular pickup?
It has 103,000 original miles, 2.7 Liter 4 cylinder engine, 5 speed manual, air conditioning, manual windows/locks, it gets approximately 25 mpg on the highway and it's only had 2 owners? The only maintence the truck has recieved was routine maintences and oil changes.

Q: 1998 Toyota Tacoma: How to keep it as long as possible?
I've seen and rode in older trucks that ride like crap, as if they came out of a junk yard. Mine has 115,000 miles on it. Doesn't drive like a brand new one, but it's decent. I'm not trying to be critical of other older vehicles. Please understand that. I'm just curious to know is it possible to have a vehicle with many miles that doesn't look and ride as if it came out of the junk yard. Many people have told me to just keep the oil changed and tires rotated. There MUST be more to it than this.
All sounds good, but what are "brushings"? I see now I need to have the front end checked.
A: Change oil every 3,000.
Never run an engine cleaner thru the engine...if you keep the oil replaced every 3,000 there is no need for it.
At the time of oil change, buy a good injector cleaner and pour it in the tank.
At every fill up...check the oil...and tire pressure.
Flush the radiator every year... summer or winter...doesn't matter...which ever is easier for you to remember.
Only use distilled water and antifreeze in the radiator..never tap water..or buy the 50/50 mix.
Keep tires rotated.
Keep the truck waxed.
At the first sign of a suspension problems have it looked at....make sure that whatever get replaced on one side also gets replaced on the other side.
If any bushings need replaced...replace them all...remember they all have been on the truck the same amount of time...rubber breaks down over time ...high mileage or not...Try and have them replaced with urethane bushings.
Every two to three years have the power steering and brake fluid replaced.
When the brake fluid is replaced have the brakes inspected.
Some of that may be overkill to some people but i guarantee it will help you get the most out of your truck.
Anywhere there is a moving joint in your suspension...a rubber bushing is inserted to keep the metal parts from rubbing.
Control arms are the hinges are that allow your suspension to go up and down...there are bushings in those hinges.
Your shocks have bushings where they are mounted to the car.
There are a variety of other places where bushings are used.
Q: How do you replace a thermostat in a 1998 Toyota Tacoma?
A: You didn't specify the engine size, but all Toyota engines have the thermostat located under the upper radiator hose water inlet connection.
The first step is to drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
The water inlet connection is usually retained by studs with nuts. Remove the nuts, then carefully work loose the water inlet after removing the upper rad hose. Make certain to remove the gasket (usually an O-ring seal which should be replaced) with the water inlet.
To install:
Clean all mating parts well. The water inlet is light alloy and easily damaged. At assembly, you want the nuts to tighten down evenly to avoid distorting and cracking the water inlet. Apply a small amount of lubricant on the threads of the studs.
When installing the new thermostat, always use a new seal. Be sure that the thermostat is positioned with the spring down or into the engine. Some thermostats use a jiggle valve (looks like a small rivet in the edge of the thermostat) that must be at the top or 12 o'clock position.
Lubricate the new replacement O-ring seal with anti-freeze and install the water inlet. Install the nuts finger-tight making sure the water inlet is properly seated. Tighten the nuts to 10 to 14 ft. lbs. (13 to 19 Nm). Do NOT over-tighten, or the water inlet may crack.
Install the hoses and wire connectors removed for access. Make certain the coolant hoses are not kinked or twisted after installation. .
Fill the cooling system with coolant, start the engine and check for leaks.
Q: What would you say is a good first car? im thinking about a 1998 toyota tacoma?
A: As the others said, Pick-up truck are really for working purpose, not for cummute daily driving. The suck gasoline like a vampire. It will cost you $60 to fill up each time, probably gets you around 200-300 miles or so. which a corolla can get with $25 filling. I recommand a first car to be a small compact like focus, coroll, civics, neon like. Or if you dont like those, the bigger camry accord could be a good pick.
Unless you are a construction workers or needs a truck for some reason, no one else should recommands it.
Q: Is a used 1998 Toyota Tacoma a good truck to buy?
A: Ecellent truck with 2 engines. A 147 hp and 158lbs of torque 4 and a 3.4 V6 which is overkill. They last 4 -ever and last, at least mine I sold at 397,000 miles, and here that all the time. I also had a 1982 4by4 with a 4" inch lift and 36" tires that pullled 15 yard dump trucks out of mud being a contractor with a 125 hpo 22r 4 cykinder with 135lb's of torque. Also the Xtra cab 5 spd 6 cylinder is the fastest car Toyota ever sold stock to Public From 1997 -1999 when they stopped 6 Cylinder and put in xtra cab Pre-Runner.
Q: 1998 Toyota Tacoma or 97 2 door Chevy Tahoe?
I'm buying my first car pretty soon and i've pretty much narrowed it down to these 2 vehicles. I have about 8000 bucks to spend. I'm going to be using it primarily to get from home to school/work. It also has to be a 4x4 because it will be taken offroad ALOT. Which do you think I should get and why?
A: The toyota would be the best bet because of fuel economy, also the resale on a v8 american car is going to suck really bad! But witht the toyota you need to get the 4 cylinder 22re enging because the v6 goes through water pumps and head gaskets quick and both are not cheap to replace. The 22re is a little underpowered from what i hear but there are turbos and you can gear it better. The only problems for the toyota off road in that year i am pretty sure it is IFS (independant front suspension) and they have a chain driven transfer case. plus the chevy is so heavy you need lots of power and stronger axels to do alot of off roading.
Q: What is the sizes for a 1998 Toyota Tacoma Tire?

Q: where are the VIN's located on 1998 toyota tacoma?
A: on the top of the dash near the drivers side front window, its visible looking through the windsheild from the outside
might have one in the drivers door jamb (sp) too
Q: How reliable is the 4 cylinder engine in the 1998-2002 Toyota Tacoma's (4 x 4) ?
Do I need a 6 cyl. with the 4WD? I don't tow anything much but I do have a trailer. What about fuel economy?
A: My '87 4banger has gotten me through the toughest offroad trails around. With a trailer, you would probably want the six, depending on what kind of loads you will carry. Those four cylinder engines are great, last forever, have low range torque for off-roading, and make pretty good truck engines (unless you will tow a 28' ski boat)
