Q: Is a small exhaust leak on my 1989 toyota supra turbo causing me less boost/torque?
I just got a 89 supra turbo and replaced the factory turbo, but the car lacks a little power. It needs a bit of a tune up. believe me, but I think most of the power loss is from a small exhaust leak near the downpipe/manifold area. I bolted those gaskets down like a mother f***** so I think the leak is coming from elsewhere like a faulty, rusted out weld near the cat or something. If you can help me out, that would be sweet!!! k thanks!!

A: Dear Klondike- The exhaust leak will cause a boost loss in the system. But over-tigntening gaskets can be just as harmful if they deform and leave an open leak area between the two sealing points. Get your exhaust leak fixed, and purchase a new set of gaskets. Then follow the manufacturer's Torque Specs for the proper tightening procedures. If you over tighten them there is a possibility your can also warp the mounting surfaces for the gaskets and or the Turbo Charger. Then you are going to be into a real bill for parts and labor. Especially if you damage the Turbo Charger. Those baby's are about $1200.00 bucks re-built, and close to $2000.00 new. Toyota does not build their Turbo Chargers, they subcontract to Garrett. Those are big dollar turbos. You might want to consider that before getting the pipe extension for your wrench! :) He He He! After the turbo-charger can be an issue to, as some of the waste gate systems have a pressure monitor tube that will open the gate at a specific amount of exhaust pressure. But I don't know if your car is equipped with such a device. It could be computer controlled, and if it is there is a sensor inthe system that monitors Intake Pressure, this may be a MAP Sensor Issue too. Anyhow, I hope I was able to help you out!

Q: Blown Head Gasket on 1989 Toyota Supra?
I know someone who is selling a 1989 Toyota Supra, everything on the car is fine, except it has a blown head gasket. I know this can get to be very expensive, because I'm sure parts such as Radiator and Water Pump probably have to be replaced due to the blown head gasket/overheating. What would be a good price to take this to a shop to have it repaired? Please, no answers like "Too much, might as well just get another car", I actually want to know how much it would cost.

A: Don't get another car. Get another engine. I've blown two head gaskets on my 89 Supra. Both times, it was around 2000 to replace. A used JDM engine? around 700. And comes with warranty. AND a transmission. How much are they selling the car for? If it's anything more than $1000, walk away from it.

Q: how do i install a manual boost controller on an 1989 toyota supra i might need pic too?

A: Depending on the controller, you need vacuum access heaing towards the wastegate actuator(vacuum line going to a gold cylinder looking thing towards your turbo). And you also need a power source, ground source, and some other sources depending on your controller. Wait you said manual.... My guess is to install it anywhere, and T the vacuum line from your intake manifold going to your wastegate actuator and that should do it. Set it low when you install it so you can slowly increase boost as you decide how much you want by adjusting the controller.

Q: 1989 toyota supra alarm system?
my friends supra is not starting(turning over). it got the right battery thats charged and when u put the battery terminal on the alarm goes on right away and the only way to shut it off is to unplug the viper alarm under the dash. when u turn the kay the car does not turn over and i dont have a clue wat it could be

A: it has the Viper aftermarket alarm. when the battery is disconnected, the alarm will arm itself and shut off the ignition for starting. you cannot just unplug the viper alarm as it will also disable the ignition when plugged back in. What you have to do when the battery is disconnected, is to turn the ignition switch on to run position before you reconnect the battery. (the logic here for the alarm is if you have the key, you must be an owner). It may beep just slightly as the battery is re-connected.

Q: is my 1989 toyota supra a classic?

A: yes. if it's in pristine condition. they have a horrible habit of rust build-up in the bottom of back window, due 2 its design. insure that, that never happens & u'll improve its value.

Q: how much would a 1989 twin turbo automatic toyota supra sell for? its white, power windows 6 cylinder?
im trying to sell one and dont know the normal price 106,000 miles

A: The twin turbo supra did not come out until 1993. There were single turbo supras prior to that. Unless you have modified the car. The 3rd Gen supras are desirable, but not nearly as much as the 4th gen.

Q: Which one is faster: Nissan 300zx or Toyota Supra????
1987 Nissan 300zx Non-Turbo vs.1989 Toyota Supra Non-Turbo

A: ummm....why does that matter.....are you gonna be racing... =() omg i was at my friends house and these two guys (that we knew) were like 'lets race' im just thinkin 'what are they talkin bout?' anyway my bud went in a car, i did too...(by this time i guess you could say i figured what they ment) and omg we went like 105 it scared the everything outa me! i mean seriously wow. I didnt go racing again!

Q: Question for people who drive a Toyota Supra ONLY!!!?
What do you think of the people that drive tuned up Toyota Cressidas. refering to the 1989 to 1992 Cressidas. Would you refer them as ricers or proper tuners. I am talking about the people that tune up the car properly, not gt wing and stickers. I drive a 1992 Toyota Cressida Grande and it is PROPERLY tuned up... When I said properly tuned, I meant it is not a ricer

A: I drive two Supras. 1988 and 1989. The 1988, pushing around 450whp, full race car. Two years of building, approximately 1,200 hours of labor/tuning. That said: There is no way to "properly" tune up a car, unless you go to Midas, and get a tune up. Your car is properly tuned, from the factory. That's why they release it, in the form that it was originally purchased in. Otherwise, regardless of what car you have, and this includes my car, they're just modified. And as everyone has their own taste, they're modified to specific taste. Also, unless you actually spent hours and hours on your car, tuning each detail of it, such as the camber angle, the brake resistance, your throttle position, etc....you have not tuned anything on your car. A few hours on a dyno, is not tuning your car. It's tuning one aspect of your vehicle. Just because you know when your turbo kit kicks in, doesn't mean a thing. At 2600 rpm, second gear, what % load are your fuel injectors under? What g does it pull on a skid pad? What kg is your spring rate, and what testing did you do, to choose that rate? If you've tuned your car, you'd have these answers. But, you asked two questions. What do we think of the drivers, and what do we think of the cars? For the cars, I don't care in the slightest. Build whatever you want, modify whatever you want. If you've done the work yourself, awesome. If you paid someone else to do it, and you just spit out the info that they gave you....why are you proud of it? All you did was spend money. Anyone can do that. For the drivers, if you start referring to your car as a tuner, and you haven't really done anything but bolt stuff on it...you're as ricer as anyone else. And I'm immediately not interested in your car.

Q: why is my car burning so rich?
I have a 1989 Toyota Supra turbo (58,000miles) that misfires really bad when the engine gets hot and I thought it was the spark plugs cause I change those but It didn't do anything. You can smell raw unburnt gas when your standing in back of the car and even when I'm driving it, and the gas mileage is horrible (about 10-15mpg). There is no distributor on this car so it wouldn't be the ignition timing, so other than that I have no clue. I'm selling the car soon, but before I do I wanna fix this. Any Ideas? there is no check engine light on though... but could it still be a sensor of some sort?

A: O2 sensor, plugged airfilter, leaking injector

Q: can you fix a bend in the chassis?
the car is a 1989 toyota supra turbo. they say it has a minor bend in the chassis. can you get it fixed and how much would i cost

A: if you can get your chassis straightened for 600 you better jump on it but yes if its a minor bend but dont expect to spened less then a grand to cover all the labor to get it ready for the frame machine then putting it back together
